Task 4: Evaluation

Did you enjoy the workshop day? What were your best bits and why?
I enjoyed the workshop 100% despite the long day, and it was definately my most memorable moment of year 12 as a whole. Although it was a much longer day than we were used to, being a really close 'media family' allowed us to keep energy high and have fun from start to finish. It was really interesting to see the crew working (who were all really nice)and to help them, and made me think more about persuing a career in the industry. i cannot pin point a favourite part as it was all so brilliant, but one moment that was really nice was the end (not because it ended) but because we all felt a sense of acomplishment and we all celebrated by bundling on the crash mats- even Miss Blackborow.

2. What did you learn from participating in the workshop?
The main thing i learnt was that it is crucial to leave around 2 hours extra time at the end of the day incase things go wrong and need unexpected time to sort out. And with us this occured in the morning where we were very behind, but we used the extra two hours to sort this out and managed to catch up on ourselves toward the end by pushing on and working more effectively.

I also learnt that time as a whole needed to be managed very brutally, with Jasmine always pushing on at the crew to start shooting and spend less time inbetween takes- which allowed us to finish on schedule.

Lastly i learnt that planning the shot list for the day is actually very technical in order to make sure energy levels stay the same and high throughout the day- which will then ensure continuity with the dancing and energy in the final video. For instance we did the main bands shots (while the dancers rested_ and then gave the band a rest whilst filming the dancer shots straight after.

Personally i learnt that 'pop' is not my thing and i am not a very confident dancer, however it did increase my confidence after the first few hours of getting into it i thouroughly enjoyed it, however i dont think i will ever try to be a dancer in my music video in september :).

3. Are you pleased with the footage and your edit? Is it how you expected it to look?
I am very pleased with our edit, it almost matches the real video perfectly! The only issue is lighting, but of course it would be a very big task to perfect this, and it was something we just didnt have time for, and so grading was needed at the end of the edit. Also i was very happy that, as we could not use paint to throw, the confetti seemed to have the same visual effect in the edit and actually looked really nice and good.
Lastly i think that we managed to get alot of takes of the same set up which gave us enough variety to match up shots, or if we wanted create a new interpretation of the video. So i think we did really well getting the fottage as a whole, which made the editing process alot easier and it looks how i expected it to look if not better.

 4. How do you think your workshop experiences will impact on your approach to next term's music video coursework?
I think the music video workshop will make me alot more professional when creating our music video next year, as i have learnt alot of tips to time manage and do convincing lip syncs etc. and so will strive and push for this to be perfected in my own video.
As well as this, it has also made me want to be in my music video next year, not as a main part, but as a back part again, as i found this very fun.
Although the workshop was a great experience, it was a very complicated to set up, and so i think i will try to make my music video alot simpler but hopefully still achieve the same great visual effect and high energy.

Task 3: Re-Edit

For this task we had to re-dit a section of the music video of '5ive - everybody get up', which included the first verse and the third chorus. We were split up into pairs we had not yet worked in and we're given an edit suite containing as close to the rushes of the video we could get. OUr task was to rearrange the clips back into the right order and making us have to consider close editing as much as possible, frame ordering and also giving us an insight into working with raw footage. I worked in a pair with Charley and this is our re-edit (the original was placed in the corner so we could work in sync with it).

From this task i learned:importance
1) The significance of discontinuity; using jump cuts from extreme close ups to wide and long shots, which a music industry convention as well as a way to keep the video visually dynamic, entertaining and fast paced.

2) Editing to the beat of the song combines the lyrics and footage together visually and rhythmically to create a music video rather than a video to music, it also adds to artist identity emphasising the dance moves etc.

3)I also learned how to create audience involvement and establish a fan/artist relationship by including crowd shots of a catchy dance routine which the viewer could easily copy, and as well as focusing in on different elements of action in CU's making the viewer feel immersed in the action- for instance the shots of the break dancing.

4) Fillers are a good technique to use (e.g. of dancers and paint) as they build on layers to the depth of the story add another visually appealing aspect to keep the audience gripped as well as continuing the original narrative.

5)A change of lighting and mise en scene provide to and add extra visual pleasures for the viewer in unison with the fillers etc.

What i particularly like about this video is the way it includes shots of the band jumping off of a stage, breaking the fourth wall between performer and crowd and even audience, by bring the band down to an equal level, making the possibilities of singing along and doing the dance routine ever more reachable by the viewer and really immersing them into the narrative. There are also very few set ups t in the video which shows me it is not all about quantity but quality and editing between these at a fast pace makes it seem like there are more. This technique will be particularly helpful when shooting our own music video when time is short and equipment/ sets are limited.

Task 2: Lipsync Audition

This is my lipsync auduition that I and Lewis (group 3) created prior to our prelim music video project working on the music video for 5ive 'Everybody get up'.

From this excersise i have deduced that i would only like to be a minor part in recreating the actual music video, as i am not very confident with dancing and being infront of the camera.

But overal i had alot of fun with this lipsync excercise and i feel it helped me alot to overcome some initial nerves of perferming, and Lewis and i have decided on doing some more practise lipsyncs in order to perfect this intime for our real coursework project.
